Paris born composer Charles Gounod (Prix du Rome 1839 - composition) and his father, the artist Francois Gounod (Prix du Rome1783 - painting) both spent time in Italy honing their craft. The Mass of St. Cecilia was Charles Gounod's first major work and it premiered on St. Cecilia's Day, November 22, 1855 in Paris. The DPC performs the beautiful Mass of St. Cecilia along with another favorite classical choral piece, Antonio Vivaldi's exhuberant Gloria.
These two contrasting scores will feature all the wonderful sounds the choir, orchestra and soloists in this magnificent program of some of the world's best music.
